Phoenix to Produce Oil for CHP at Co-Operative Group New Headquarters
The Co-operative Group has chosen Phoenix Group as fuel supply services partner for the supply of rapeseed oil to power its brand new headquarters in Manchester city centre. Phoenix will provide a comprehensive supply service; collecting rapeseed grown on Co-operative farms, pressing it to produce rapeseed oil, and finally delivering this to the new headquarters by road tanker.
The CHP system being installed at the new headquarters, which comprises of two 397kWe CHP units, will provide electricity, heating and hot water, plus chilled water for use in the building’s air conditioning system.
The choice of Co-operative grown rapeseed oil as the fuel source underpins the Group’s stated aim of leading on environmental issues – creating one of the most sustainable commercial buildings in Europe and one of the UK’s first designated as ‘outstanding’ under BREEAM – with a Display Energy Certificate rating of A. Phoenix’s complete production traceability over large volumes of oil ensures the Co-operative can be confident that the oil they receive is 100% produced from seed grown on their farms.
Due for completion in summer 2012, the 15-storey building – being constructed by main contractor, BAM Construction - will become home to more than 3,000 employees working across the Group’s family of retailing and financial services businesses. LowC Communities Ltd is supplying the CHP system via the project’s mechanical and electrical contractor, Rotary North West.
